(LĪHUʻE) – On Friday morning, September 5, a live mongoose was captured on Kaua‘i at Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor by team members of Kaua‘i Invasive Species Committee (KISC) in a multi-agency effort to prevent the establishment of mongoose on Kaua‘i .
On September 4th, KISC deployed 12 traps baited with fresh coconuts along the jetty wall at Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor after receiving reports of a possible mongoose sighting. The following morning, a juvenile female mongoose was found in one of the traps. KISC handed the mongoose over to the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity (DAB) who is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture – Wildlife Services to complete an analysis. Kauaʻi currently has no breeding populations of mongoose thanks to rapid response efforts and interagency partnerships. Check out the full press release below.
