Invasive Species Field Associate I

KISC is currently accepting applications for our Invasive Species Field Associate I position. We are looking for someone to help with response efforts to safeguard Kauai against high-priority invasive plant and pest impacts.
- Duties: Works in the field, as directed, to eradicate or control invasive alien plant and animal species, plant pathogens and disease vectors as identified by the project manager and committee. Fieldwork involves reconnaissance, surveys, and mechanical/chemical removal for invasive alien species in natural, urban, and suburban areas. Fieldwork includes off trail areas where exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, heavy rainfall, mosquitoes, and difficult terrain is common. Implements protocol to prevent seed dispersal, follows decontamination protocols, and conducts all operations according to accepted safety standards and established protocols. Fieldwork requires the ability to drive project vehicles both on and off road, work in and around helicopters, and handle pesticides. Keeps accurate and detailed records of treatment and control work. Operates a Global Positioning System (GPS) and downloads GPS units. Inputs and updates data and produces maps and other materials to guide daily field activities. Assists with maintenance of equipment/field gear, vehicles, and project base yard, including proper storage of herbicides. Assists with public relations activities and events and attains favorable public relations with property owners and other members of the public. Contributes to creating and preserving a positive work environment and serves as a valued member of the field team. Position requires a flexible work schedule including early morning and late night hours and occasional weekends. Progression from an Invasive Species Field Associate I to Invasive Species Field Associate II may be possible upon demonstrated ability to meet established performance factors and project specific competencies, including satisfactory completion of all required trainings.
- Salary: $3,400/month.
- Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Knowledge: Basic knowledge of Hawaiian biota/natural history and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of field activities relating to natural resources management. Knowledge of identification of common native Hawaiian plants and common introduced weed species.

KISC CRB Technician

KISC is currently accepting applications for our Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) Technician position to help support collaborative CRB mitigation efforts on Kauai. This position a combination of outreach, planning, and fieldwork.
- Duties: Provides comprehensive training on Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) management and technical assistance to partner agencies, private industry stakeholders, and community stakeholders. Conducts field surveys for CRB and assists in identifying specimens collected as a result of surveys, as well as from samples submitted by the public and other agencies. Collects data on efficiency and post treatment monitoring of operational plans. Participates in CRB data collection efforts and enters data into appropriate databases. Drives to and from field sites and events. Assists in other activities related to the CRB strategy for Kauai, this includes assisting with applied research and extension activities of the Kauai Invasive Species Committee. Assists with implementing eradication and mitigation plans. Expected outcomes of the program include enhanced awareness of CRB issues and development of educational resources to control and manage the invasive pest species for people, industry and natural resource managers. - Salary: $4,071/month.
- Education: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in natural sciences or communication-related field.
- Experience:1-2 years of experience in natural resources, agriculture, nursery and landscaping, insect pest control, or science communication related field.

Part-Time / Temporary Invasive Species Field Crew Positions
Open
KISC has field crew positions available. These positions are temporary (up to 5-months long) positions surveying and controlling invasive plants and pests. Work ranges from remote off-trail areas to urban locations across the island and covers a range of high-priority invasive plant and pest species.
- Salary: Minimum salary is $3,200/month.
- Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
- No experience necessary. Familiarity with Hawaiian plants and animals, natural history, and threats from invasive species is desirable.
- Valid driver’s license
- Willingness to work with pesticides and herbicides.
