Pono Nurseries

The following businesses have also chosen to partner with KISC and Plant Pono, and follow Pono commitments to help protect Kauai from invasive species. Please choose a Pono Endorsed Nursery for all your plant and landscaping needs!

Who: Ron Barretto – Ron’s Nursery & Yard Service

Where: On the right hand (ocean side) of Laipo Road when coming from Kawaihau Road.

Hours: Nursery is open 7 days a week. If the gates are closed, give him a call, he might be just right down the road.

What: Ron has been servicing the east side of Kauai for 32 years. He has a small nursery, but all plants have been sourced or grown locally. Ron never imports plants from off-island. You can find various palm species, native plants, and many common ground covers and hedge plants at Ron’s Nursery. Ron also does yard service and landscaping. You can see his most recent landscaping work at the Coral Reef Hotel.

Who: Serina Roush Marchi – Kauai Seascapes Nursery Inc.

Where: 4741 Kahiliholo Rd, Kilauea (Kalihiwai 96754)

Hours: Mon-Fri 8-4 & Sat 9-2

What: Kauai Seascapes Nursery is a family owned business operating on Kauai for over 30 years. They have a small, but very friendly and knowledgeable team. They carry many common and some rare tropical plants, but you won’t find many invasive species there! Seascapes does not carry any of the plants listed on either the Pono Endorsement Programs Black List or Phase Out List. Serina is keeping her nursery pono by quarantining any plants she might order from other islands with Coqui Frog or Little Fire Ants, to take extra steps in minimizing the spread. She has also agreed to clean her landscaping equipment between work sites to ensure weeds are not spreading from one yard to the next. Seascapes also offers many landscaping services such as landscape design, lighting, irrigation, maintenance, and plant installation.

Who: Ray Maki – Permaculture Kauai

Where: 6227 Koolau Rd, Kilauea (Moloaa) 96756.

Hours: Open by appointment

What: Permaculture Kauai specializes in growing non-invasive clumping bamboo, permaculture agro-forestry plants, and general landscaping plants. You can also find a great selection of fruit trees at this nursery. Ray keeps his nursery pono by growing all his specialized plants, instead of importing from off-island. He does not sell any of the Endorsement Program Black or Phase Out List plants, and activity controls for invasive species on his property to prevent any volunteer weeds from growing in his nursery stock.

What: Over 25 years experience serving Kauai’s east side and north shore. Stroll through their peaceful nursery to find high quality, healthy local plants. They also offer a selection of hardscape accessories including large ceramic planters.  The nursery stays pono by growing all their own plants–no plants are imported.

What: Steve Sico has been raising tropical flowers and foliage on Kauai for 30 years. He specializes in unique Ti plants, foliage, and fragrant flowers. You will find that Steve’s nursery stock is weed free, as he diligently works to keep his property clear of invasive species. Steve also has a wood chipping/landscaping business. Call Steve if you need land cleared with a chipper or need to make mulch. He clears land without grubbing, digging up all your healthy soil, or damaging your land.

What: Anthuriums and More Nursery specializes in locally grown landscape plants and ground covers.  You can find an amazing selection of anthuriums and more at this nursery. Peter keeps his nursery pono by growing the majority of his selection himself while also inspecting, surveying, and/or treating all plants that are sourced from off-island.  He does not carry any of the Black List or Phase-out List plants while still offering a tropical variety to his customers

Who: Eva Michetti – Ahonui Arrangements

What: Eva started Ahonui Arragements out of her love for tropical ornamentals she grew around her house. Ahonui Arrangements specializes on bouquets, lei, and any other arrangements for special occasions. Eva signed up for Plant Pono to ensure that she does what she can to protect the island from the spread of invasive species.

What: Mohala Landscape Design specializes in propagation, design, installation, and maintenance of native landscapes. Landscapes are well thought out and designed with purpose, meaning, and function. Owner Angelina Kissida has been a Landscape Industry Certified Technician with over 10 years of experience. Sharing her native plants with others and caring for our islands is her passion.

Who: Lizzy Baxter – Aina Akua Plants LLC

Where: Saturday Farmers Market at Anaina Hou Community Center in Kilauea.

Hours: Saturday 9am-12pm

What: Lizzy works full time in conservation while maintaining a hobby of growing native and unique plants. Focused on representation of native species and support of other local businesses, Lizzy can be found each Saturday morning at the Anaina Hou Farmers Market. If not grown herself, her plants are sourced from locals around the island who also have a passion for growing plants. All plants are regularly surveyed for LFA.

You can also call Dayne for consultations regarding plant health and placement. Native by Design is a Pono business because Dayne first chooses native and local plants for his designs. If Dayne buys plants from off-island he inspects and surveys the plants for Coqui and Little Fire Ant before placing them in your yard.
