Wax Myrtle

Wax Myrtle

Species: Morella cerifera
Family: Myricaceae


Although there are no known  populations of Wax Myrtle on Kauaʻi, KISC will actively control this species. Sightings of this pest should be reported immediately. If you suspect that you have any of our targets on your property, KISC will survey and if confirmed, will remove it for free.

Description


  • Evergreen shrub or small tree growing up to 35ft

  • Multiple crooked trunks are covered in smooth, grayish bark
  • Olive green leaves are 3in long with serrated edges growing in an alternate pattern
  • Small grayish-white flowers, small grayish-blue fruit grow in clusters along the twigs
  • Native to coastal southeastern United States.

      Impacts


      • Forms dense thickets
      • Promotes fire frequency
      • Rapid growth and frequent sucking from trunk base and roots
      • Major Florida agricultural weed, dominating pastures
      • Seeds dispersed by birds. Underground runners extend the growth locally

      On Kauai

      Only known locations have been eradicated in Haena and Kapaa. KISC is currently monitoring for recruitment.

      On the Pono Endorsement Black List.  Pono Endorsed Nurseries and Landscapers have agreed to immediately discontinue the sale of Wax Myrtle.

      You can plant pono by reporting Wax Myrtle to KISC at 808-821-1490 or kisc@hawaii.edu .  KISC crew members can remove it from your landscaping free of charge and help identify suitable replacements.
